The Sustainable Design and Intelligent Manufacturing Laboratory (SDIM Lab) at the Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing, University of Kentucky conducts fundamental and applied research to advance the design, production, use, and recovery of products to advance circular economy and sustainable manufacturing. The laboratory develops innovative methods, models, metrics, and digital tools that integrate circular and sustainable design guidelines, intelligent manufacturing technologies, and systems-level decision making to improve economic, environmental, and societal outcomes.
The SDIM Lab recognizes that creating sustainable solutions requires a holistic perspective spanning products, processes, manufacturing systems, and supply chains that includes value recovery networks. Our research therefore combines expertise in circular and sustainable product design, manufacturing systems engineering, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), data-driven decision support, combined with circularity and sustainability assessment to enable the development of next-generation products and production systems. Through this integrated approach, the laboratory seeks to accelerate the transition toward intelligent, resilient, and circular industrial systems to advance sustainable development.
Current research thrusts of the SDIM Lab include:
- Circular and sustainable product design methods, guidelines, and decision-support tools
- Comprehensive methods and tools for product circularity assessment
- Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for in-situ real-time monitoring and control of additive and hybrid manufacturing processes
- Digital tools, including digital passports, digital twins, and AI-integrated decision support models, for circular economy and sustainable manufacturing implementation
- Modeling, optimization, and continuous improvement of sustainable manufacturing systems and supply chains
