The future of manufacturing depends not only on what we make, but on how we design products, transform materials, and steward resources to create sustainable value. At ISM, we are advancing knowledge, technologies, and the workforce needed to build that future.

Welcome to the Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing (ISM) at the University of Kentucky.

Since its founding, ISM has become a globally recognized center for sustainable manufacturing research, education, and industry engagement. Building on a strong legacy of integrating products, processes, and systems, the institute has helped shape the field, advance innovative technologies, and educate generations of students and professionals.

As I begin my tenure as Director, I am honored to build upon this foundation while helping position ISM for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

Manufacturing is undergoing profound transformation as supply chains evolve, digital and additive technologies reshape operations, and circular economies create new demands for innovation. Meeting these challenges requires systems thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and strong partnerships across academia, industry, government, and society.

Our vision is to further strengthen ISM as a leading international institute advancing sustainable manufacturing across products, processes, and systems. We are committed to advancing impactful research that addresses real-world challenges while developing tools and technologies that enable manufacturers to improve productivity, competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability simultaneously.

Education and workforce development remain central to our mission. Through innovative academic programs, industry-relevant training, and hands-on research, we are dedicated to preparing the next generation of engineers, researchers, and manufacturing leaders to drive manufacturing transformation in Kentucky, nationally, and globally.

Equally important are our partnerships because sustainable manufacturing challenges cannot be solved in isolation. We will continue to strengthen collaborations with industry, government agencies, professional societies, and international partners to accelerate innovation, facilitate technology transfer, and translate research discoveries into practical impact. Through these partnerships, ISM aims to serve as a trusted resource and catalyst for advancing manufacturing excellence and sustainability.

Whether you are a prospective student, industry partner, researcher, policymaker, or member of the broader community, I invite you to explore our programs, facilities, and research initiatives. We welcome opportunities to collaborate and work together to create a future in which manufacturing remains a driver of economic prosperity, environmental stewardship, and societal well-being.

Thank you for your interest in the Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing. I look forward to the partnerships and innovations that will shape the next chapter of ISM.
